2016 was an action-packed year for Australia-Middle East Journalism Exchange. We ran two extremely successful study tours: one tour for Qatar University delegates to Australia, and one tour for University of Canberra delegates to the UAE and Qatar. Together, the study tours offered 11 promising journalism and media students from opposite sides of the globe first-hand exposure to foreign cultures, work practices and professional networks; and the opportunity to develop knowledge, attitudes and skills that will serve them throughout their entire careers. Ultimately, these delegates’ are now equipped to produce better informed journalism that enhances cross-cultural understanding between Australia and the Middle East.
As a young organisation we are extremely proud of what we’ve achieved in just 18 months, and we have a lot of exciting plans on the horizon. In 2017 we can confirm that once again a cohort of University of Canberra journalism students will visit the Middle East, and we are very much looking forward to including Jordan in our program for the first time, along with a return visit to Qatar.
It’s impossible to adequately express our thanks to the Council of Australian-Arab Relations (CAAR) for its support since 2015 — without the CAAR these study tours simply wouldn’t be possible. And we are also very grateful to the Embassy of the State of Qatar, the University of Canberra, and Qatar University for their support in 2016.
